Breast Cancer and Blood Clots
It is well established
that hypercoagulation
(blood that clots too readily) and cancer, especially breast
cancer, go hand in hand. Researchers often assume that breast
cancer causes the blood clots, but perhaps they are mistaking
association for cause and effect. There is much medical evidence
that a diet that promotes blood clots also promotes breast cancer
and that, conversely, a diet that thins the blood decreases one's
risk of breast cancer.
A 1998 paper found
that women with stage IV breast
cancer were in a hypercoagulable state. The hypercoaguability
persisted after chemotherapy but was reduced by very low dose
warfarin. Warfarin
is a blood thinner that works by blocking vitamin K.
Elevated estrogen levels
are linked to both blood clots and breast cancer. Estrogen
pills raise older women's risk of blood clots.
Based on the evidence,
it may be logical for women with breast cancer, or those at high
risk for breast cancer, to be placed on a diet aimed at managing
vitamin K levels and proper blood coagulation. Whether a vitamin
K managed diet would prevent breast cancer remains to be proven.
However, since women with breast cancer are at higher than average
risk for blood clots, perhaps a diet geared toward monitoring
coagulation and preventing blood clots would be a logical step
for the medical community to consider in any event.
